Electric garage door in a power cut?

Electric garage doors are becoming even more popular here in the UK, providing more convivence for daily tasks. However, they may come with a few question marks if you’ve never had one before, which is where we come in to help!

Here at Roll Right we often get customers asking us the question- but what happens when I get a power cut? This is understandable, as something that relies on electricity, having none can cause some issues. Luckily, there are solutions to this issue, and you aren’t left stranded in this situation. Let’s take a look further into this…

Manal handles

Depending on the motor, each door operates a little differently. However, most come with a manual handle, or a way of getting the door open without the need of electricity. This is called a manual override. It’s something to look out for when choosing your garage door, and important to understand when your is fitted.

How does a manual override work?

A manual override is simply a lever placed either on the side of your garage or near the motor that enables you to manually roll up the door. Each supplier is different, and the handle may look different depending on who you go with. It’s important to check with your company where this is located and exactly how it works to move the door.

The manual override isn’t designed to be used frequently and should only be operated when the door isn’t able to by itself. Please note, this will take a lot longer to open the door compared to when done with an electric motor.

What if I have no other entrance into my garage?

This is a great question, especially as this would leave you without any access into your garage.

Although electric garage doors typically come with an internal manual override system as standard, if your garage has no other point of access, you’ll need to have an external override fitted. This is a type of lever on the outside of your garage, normally on the wall or the frame, that allows you to roll the garage up from the outside. This means that if you don’t have an external door or access through the house, you’re still able to get in!

Why is it important to choose a reputable garage door company for manual overrides?

It’s essential your backup systems are working as they should, from a reputable supplier. If they are made properly, they will operate smoothly, rolling the door even without electricity. Knowing you have this option gives you peace of mind that you’ll always have access to your garage, even when the unexpected happens.
