News:How much headroom is needed for a roller garage door?

Been looking at getting a roller garage door but unsure if you have the headroom for one? We've given you an overview of everything you need to know about room required for one of these doors!

Headroom needed for a roller garage door?

This is a question we get asked a lot from customers, as it’s essential your door is fitted properly and works as it should! In roller garage doors, the headroom needed is actually a lot less compared to a lot of other garage doors. This is due to the slats rolling up above the garage opening, compacting together.

What is the typical headroom needed?

Roller doors can require various amounts of headroom depending on the style. However, typically a roller garage door will need 300 mm of room. This is to allow the system to operate smoothly and make room for the slat curtain to be stored.

There are sometimes more compact alternatives with certain models, but these are usually just for manual roller doors, not electric, as these don’t require a motor.

Factors what can affect headroom?

There are multiple factors that can alter this measurement for headroom and should be taken into consideration when choosing your door. If space is tight and you need to save room, look at these areas and see if any can be amended.

Firstly, a big part in the measurement of your garage is its height. As with roller garage doors, the taller the door, the more slats required. This means when rolled up they take up more space at the top and need a larger area to be stored.

Next, the box the roller door is stored in can vary, meaning the required size can also vary. Some doors come with smaller designs that don’t require as much space. If you are tight on headroom, looking for one of these smaller options can be a good solution. Lastly, it’s also important to note whether your slats are insulated or not. Having insulation makes the slats thicker, meaning they need more headroom.

Don’t have enough headroom?

If you don’t have enough headroom and are stuck on what to do still, consider these changes too:

  • Looking if there are any removable objects. If your headroom is tight, can you take out any beams, pipes, or lights to free up space?
  • Mount the door on the outside. Instead of having the door internally, fit the door to the outside of the wall. This does however mean your storage box will be on show.

Headroom needed for a roller garage door

To conclude, for most roller door installations, your fitters will advise a 300 mm gap. This will ensure the best look and optimal performance. However, as outlined, there are a few swaps you can make to help increase the headroom you have available!
